Key Tips to Success in Self-Publishing After 200,000+ Book Sales and Counting

Hi Reader,

Starting a self-publishing journey can be a thrilling and intimidating experience. As someone who has been on this path since late 2019 and has sold over 200,000 books, I am here to share some essential strategies and insights that have helped me succeed. Whether you are a beginner or already making progress in self-publishing using platforms like Amazon KDP or Ingram Spark, these tips will be crucial for your journey. If you want to dive deeper, you can check out my new YouTube video, and the link is included at the end of this post.

5 Key Starting Tips

  1. Invest in High-Quality Education:

The journey to increasing your chances of success in self-publishing starts with education. Investing in quality courses and content is a non-negotiable. It’s important to choose educators who are not just knowledgeable, but also ethical and genuinely invested in your success. This is the foundation upon which your publishing empire can be built.

2. Commit for the Long Term: Sustainable success in self-publishing is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s easy to get sidetracked by promises of quick riches, especially on platforms like YouTube. However, enduring success comes from a steadfast commitment to your craft and a clear focus on long-term goals. Understand that building a readership and creating quality content takes time.

3. Invest in Education and Software: Equipping yourself with the right tools and knowledge is essential. Software for efficient research, formatting, and marketing can be game-changing. These investments not only enhance the quality of your work but also streamline your publishing process, making it more efficient and effective. These software tools are particularly important for niche research, keyword research, design, and marketing. I've listed those I personally use on my website. https://www.globalselfpublishing.com/software-and-tools

4. Prioritize Quality Content: Above all, the quality of your content is paramount. Invest time in honing your writing skills and ensure your books are well-edited, formatted, and designed. High-quality content is the cornerstone of reader satisfaction and long-term success. What I see as a key reason many fail is 'speed'. They are too focused on publishing as many books as they can. This will therefore remove the focus of marketing and launching your book.

5. Publish Wide: Limiting your publications to a single platform can restrict your reach. Embracing a variety of platforms such as KDP, IngramSpark, and Draft2Digital broadens your audience and diversifies your income. This strategy not only enhances your visibility but also buffers against one platform not performing as well as another.

BONUS TIPS

  1. Allocate a Marketing Budget: Marketing your book using Amazon Advertising is a 'MUST'. Your book needs to reach the eyes of the customer and Amazon KDP will not market your book for free. There are several advantages of using Amazon ADS, and I outline them in a YouTube video HERE
  2. Develop a Launch Strategy: I developed a simple resource called Book Launch Basics if you are new to publishing a book. It will get you started in the right direction. I can't emphasize the importance of having a strategy and checklist to get traction from the very beginning: https://www.globalselfpublishing.com/resources

The road to self-publishing success is paved with continuous learning, long-term commitment, strategic investments, and a passion for the process. These principles have been the bedrock of my journey over the past 4+years.

Remember, each step on this path is an opportunity to grow and refine your craft. While these tips provide a starting point, there’s a wealth of knowledge to uncover in the expansive world of self-publishing.

For a more detailed exploration of these strategies and insights from my personal journey, I encourage you to watch the discussion on my YouTube channel.

Hi Reader, When people tell me they feel stuck creating their course, it's rarely about the tech.More often, it's this: “I have all this knowledge… but I don’t know how to structure it into a course.” It’s a common problem, and a crucial one. A well-structured course doesn’t just make your content easier to teach, it makes it easier for your students to learn, and when your students get results, your course gets shared, reviewed, and recommended. That’s how you grow. Here’s how to make sure...

Hi Reader, It’s no surprise that so many self-publishers focus on no-content and low-content books. They’re quick to produce, easy to publish, and offer a great way to learn the ropes. But what if the real opportunity was somewhere else? In my latest YouTube video, I unpack why children’s books might just be the hidden goldmine on Amazon KDP. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/yHZh68653aM Having published over 20 children’s books myself, I’ve noticed something interesting: while the time and...

Hi Reader, One of the most common concerns I hear from course creators is: “I want to create a course… but I don’t have an audience yet.” I get it. It can feel like a chicken-and-egg situation. You need an audience to sell your course, but you also want to launch your course to build an audience. So here’s the truth:You don’t need a massive following to launch a successful course. What you need is the right strategy and a few foundational steps to grow an audience of people who trust you and...
